This session provides practical, classroom-ready strategies for bringing the ACTFL Three Modes of Communication-Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational-to life in World Language and Culture classrooms. Participants will explore how intentional lesson design transforms input into authentic, meaningful interaction, fostering language use that is purposeful, culturally grounded, and student-centered. Educators will learn to integrate the three modes seamlessly into instruction using research-based strategies, instructional tools, and real-world tasks. Hands-on activities and concrete examples will help participants create authentic classroom experiences, enhance engagement, and support linguistic proficiency and cultural competence.
The purpose is to empower educators to align the three modes with ACTFL Proficiency Pyramid levels, strengthen student communication, deepen cultural understanding, and cultivate a global perspective for authentic language use.

Design ACTFL-Aligned Lessons: Create lessons that integrate the ACTFL Three Modes of Communication across all proficiency levels, moving from input to meaningful interaction while applying strategies that bring the modes to life in World Language and Culture classrooms.

Integrate Culture and Authenticity: Incorporate authentic materials, cultural practices, and perspectives into lessons to deepen students’ cultural understanding and foster meaningful connections between language use and real-world contexts.

Support Diverse Learners & Engagement: Implement research-based strategies and digital tools to design interactive, student-centered lessons that assess proficiency, build communication skills, and prepare learners for authentic, culturally grounded global interactions.

This session uses high-impact strategies to promote active participation and meaningful learning. Beginning with an interactive icebreaker, participants will explore real-world language and cultural examples modeling authentic classroom practice. Live polls, quizzes, quick checks, and guided Q&A sustain engagement. Think-pair-share, role-playing, and scenario-based tasks allow participants to apply concepts and experience the ACTFL Three Modes of Communication from a learner's perspective. Visual supports, authentic examples, and guiding questions deepen understanding, while purposeful technology fosters collaboration. Participants analyze model lessons aligned with ACTFL Proficiency Pyramid levels, brainstorm collaboratively, and adapt strategies. By session's end, they leave with practical tools to move instruction from input to interaction and bring the Three Modes to life in World Language and Culture classrooms.
