Content and Purpose:
Clip Chat, coined in 2018 and adapted from Dr. Hasting's 2013 MovieTalk, is not a new, innovative trend in the language profession; however, it is underutilized in many language classrooms. This session is a reintroduction to this instructional strategy for participants who have never heard of it, are apprehensive to use it, or for those wanting fresh ideas. This session will focus on how to plan, implement, and extend a Clip Chat to provide comprehensible and compelling input to students at all levels. Participants will play the role of a student while simultaneously learning how to intentionally plan a Clip Chat that will personally connect with and differentiate for every student. This session will offer new insight into how Clip Chats can be used as both an engagement strategy and a way to support comprehension, personalization, and participation. Participants will leave with a concrete plan on how to use Clip Chat as a sustainable and flexible strategy for all levels.
Outcomes:
Participants will be able to plan a Clip Chat using intentional pausing and questioning.
Participants will be able to implement a Clip Chat to provide compelling and comprehensible input.
Participants will be able to extend learning/acquisition for students with post-Clip Chat activities.
Audience Engagement:
Participants will actively engage in this session by experiencing a Clip Chat from the student perspective. During the demonstration, participants will respond to comprehension checks and personalized questions, as if they were my own students. Following the demonstration, participants will reflect and apply their learning by planning a Clip Chat with the help of myself and other participants in the room. Participants will have time to choose a clip and consider how to differentiate and personalize the clip. This will help them leave with a Monday-ready lesson.
Program Guide Description:
This session models Clip Chat, an interactive strategy using short videos to engage students at various proficiency levels. Participants will learn how to plan, lead, and extend Clip chat lessons to enhance comprehension, personalize instruction, and promote participation.
