Content and Purpose:

Teaching Japanese 2 can be challenging. While we strive to advance student proficiency, introducing new grammar patterns and complex content can present hurdles compared to the familiar material of Japanese 1.To effectively guide students through this stage, a well-structured and engaging curriculum that integrates assessments, vocabulary development, and grammar instruction is essential. This presentation introduces a curriculum guide designed for high school Japanese 2, building on the foundation from Japanese 1 while emphasizing instruction in the target language and fostering literacy skills. Using backwards design, presenters will guide the audience through a year-long curriculum with key words, grammar in context, essential questions, and examples of assessments. This guide will empower teachers to create dynamic learning experiences through daily communicative activities that encompass all three modes of communication and utilize authentic texts with kanji in context.

Outcomes:

Participants will be able to implement and appropriately pace an engaging novice-level 2 Japanese curriculum in their high-school setting.

Participants will be able to integrate kanji characters seamlessly into students' literacy skill development through exploration of authentic texts.

Participants will be able to utilize backwards design to adapt summative assessments which focus on the three modes of communication.

Strategies for Engagement:

First the presenters will give an overview of the learning standards that students will master in Japanese 2. The presentation will share a resource which serves as an "online guide" for participants to take home and share with their students. The presentation will be interactive and colorful, highlighting key concepts along with figures, images, and embedded links to built-in practice resources for students. The presenters will engage participants in discussion about the challenges of teaching Japanese at the high school level and how to combat them. Then the presenters will share their techniques to implement the most engaging and cohesive curriculum for Japanese 2. The participants will gain strategies for staying in the target language while utilizing this curriculum, as grammar is introduced cohesively while the units build upon themselves. The participants will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss how we can continue to further improve our curriculum.
