Content and Purpose:

Implementing inclusive practices for disabled students in the World Language (WL) classroom is critical, and can also be overwhelming. A long-time language instructor and a researcher of second language learning and disability team up to guide this discussion to (a) explore the difficulties for many disabled students in language education and (b) share some straightforward ways to address students' needs using approaches like accommodation and early inclusive design practices (like Universal Design for Instruction), as well as instructional strategies like differentiation. Real classroom examples will be shared from English and Arabic instruction. Teachers will come away with a list of simple ways to incorporate accessible and inclusive practices into their own classrooms, as well as access to a network of educators dedicated to inclusive practices.

Outcomes:

Participants will be able to explain why inclusive practices are helpful for disabled students in the WL classroom.

Participants will be able to discuss inclusive practices like accommodation and Universal Design instructional paradigms with colleagues.

Participants will be able to identify places to infuse inclusive practices in their own courses and implement 2 strategies.
