Content and Purpose:
College credits for high school courses, otherwise known as dual enrollment programs, have seen a steady rise in participation over the last two decades. The benefits to students include early access to college credits and reduced tuition for credits. High school teachers may benefit from affiliations with a local college. But what are the effects of these programs on college language enrollments? This roundtable will explore data to draw conclusions about the pros, the cons, and some hidden aspects of these dual enrollment programs for the future of language learning and teaching in the US. For example, what percentage of students in dual enrollment classes choose to major in a language in college? What percentage of diverse students are afforded the opportunity to take these courses? Are they impacted differently? What are the roundtable participants' experiences with these programs? What are the key features of effective programs? And finally, how can we improve these programs?
Outcomes:
Participants will be able to articulate the key features of effective dual enrollment programs.
Participants will be able to evaluate the efficacy of their own program, if they have one, or weigh the pros and cons of introducing such a program.
Participants will be able to advocate for improvements to dual enrollment programs with high school and college administrators.
Program Guide Description:
Dual enrollment programs have benefits but also potential drawbacks and hidden costs at the college level. Roundtable participants will discuss their experiences with these programs, view data trends for high school and college dual enrollment programs, discuss features of effective programs and explore ways to improve these programs.
