Content and Purpose:
In this roundtable, the presenter will share a model for experiential learning in teacher education based on teaching pre-service teachers a language new to them, and guiding reflection on those learning experiences and their implications for teaching their own language students. Language teacher education often introduces pre-service teachers to principles & research about effective language education that develops learners' language proficiency. However, Lortie (1975) suggests that teachers fall back on the experiences they had as a learner, regardless of what later teacher education or school expectations tell them. Can experiential learning build pre-service teachers' ability to use new models for instruction more effectively? Come share your ideas and experiences with innovative, experiential learning in language teacher education for pre-service and in-service teachers of any language (WL and/or ESL).
Outcomes:
Participants will learn about and evaluate a model of experiential learning, using language learning experiences and reflection, and that model’s potential usefulness in language teacher education.
Participants will discuss experiences and ideas for effectively helping language teachers to adopt teaching practices that are known to lead students to develop language proficiency.
Participants will leave with contact information from like-minded peers and a next step to take to incorporate more experiential learning in their own teacher education (in teacher peer support, and/or at university, department, or district level).
