Abstract:

Fundraising for archives requires a thoughtful, strategic approach-one that balances institutional priorities with the passions of potential donors. This session brings together archival and advancement professionals from varied backgrounds to share successful fundraising strategies that align donor interests with the mission and needs of the archives. We will explore how archives can identify priority funding areas, engage donors through compelling storytelling and elevator pitches, and ensure that fundraising efforts support-not distract from-their core work. Participants will learn how to work within existing institutional structures, collaborate effectively with development and advancement teams, and plan resource needs for a range of giving levels. The session will also address how to navigate challenges such as staff turnover and shifting priorities while maintaining strong relationships with advancement partners. We'll examine the benefits and limitations of different fundraising approaches, including crowdsourcing, annual giving, and membership programs. A central theme of this session is balancing donor interests with the core mission of the archives. We will explore how to build partnerships that are both mutually beneficial and grounded in the archives' fundamental purpose and values-without compromising professional standards to meet donor expectations. This session will offer practical, ethical guidance for cultivating and sustaining donor relationships that support long-term archival sustainability. We also aim to foster an inclusive, forward-thinking conversation about the evolving future of fundraising in the archival profession.
